CLEAR-ly, A Mnemonic Device

Mnemonic devices are used as memory aids for several purposes. I encountered one today that I shared with my agents before the shift ended to improve customer satisfaction. This can be used by pretty much anybody who deals with customers.

What I learned at work recently…

When dealing with customers, remember to be C-L-E-A-R.

C - are

L- isten

E - mpathize

A-nticipate

R -esolve/Respect your Customers

I felt nostalgic and I tried to remember the mnemonic devices that I encountered before in school and out. Try to see if you remember what they mean:

1. ROY G BIV.

2. F-A-C-E

3. SOH-CAH-TOA

4. I before E except after C

5. My Very Earnest Mother Just Served Us Nine Pickles

6. Every Good Boy Does Fine

7. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

8. Kids prefer cheese over fried green spinach.

Have fun! :D

I give up! What does ROY G BIV mean, if not the colors of the rainbow?

That’s exactly what it is! ROY G BIV is a mnemonic device that helps you remember the colors of the rainbow.

Yay! You got one! :D

Hint: “Every Good Boy Does Fine” and FACE has something to do with Music.

One mnemonic I can’t forget since elementary is CLAYGO, plastered in our school’s cafeteria. It means CLean As You GO.

#5 are the planets… but I guess we have to update it because Pluto got demoted. (See this Jason Kottke post on a new planetary mnemonic contest: http://www.kottke.org/06/08/pluto-mnemonic-device-contest-results)

#2 and #6 are the spaces and the lines on a music treble clef.

Eugene: Correct!

*sniff* no more Pluto. :(

Soh-cah-toa is a mnemonic in trigonometry. sine=opposite/hypotenuse;cosine=adjacent/hypotenuse; tangent=opposite/adjacent.
